Good morning!
Spring is in full bloom and all of the babies are being born and hatched and are learning all about their surroundings and how to move in their awkward little bodies. I had the awesome opportunity to watch two of my brothers compete in rodeos this past weekend. While at the event I was able to watch a group of mares and their foals eating and playing in the pasture they were in. What joy to watch the weeks’ old foal running around the pasture teasing his mother, and her chasing after him and also kicking up her heals. Makes my heart sing.
I stopped in at a local feedmill on Wednesday this week and brought home some fuzzy additions to the farm. The decision had been to not get chicks this year due to having a very busy spring with multiple weddings, graduations and rodeos on the schedule. But, one of our hens decided that she wanted to be a momma again and started to sit on a clutch of eggs. She persisted for about a week, stealing fresh laid eggs and filling her nest with them. I finally took pity on her as we don’t have a rooster and so none of the eggs are fertilized. They were only going to rot as she sat on them. So, I acquired a few (9🫣) babies. I slowly placed them underneath her over the past couple of days to see if she would accept them and adopt them as her own babies instead of the eggs. It was a success!

She quickly adopted them and has been the happiest and best mother hen you could imagine. She clucks at the babies and is showing them all the ways of being a good little chicken.
